OK I'll try that. It is also not starting with every turn of the key. I just hear the click and then if I try a few times, it connects (with the grinding noise). I pulled the bottom cover off the flywheel to see how things were lining up and the drive gear is sitting right up against the flywheel. Is it supposed to be that close? I think when I hear the click, it's the drive gear trying to launch out but not having enough clearance to turn and align with the flywheel teeth. It just smacks against the flywheel until I turn the key a few times and it slowly rotates with each turn to finally catch between the teeth. So it seems that it's not retracted enough as well.
