If the noise sounded like detonation or a rod knock, it's possible that your trip on the highway dislodged a chunk of carbon and pinched it between the piston and the flat part of the head. It would happen suddenly and then slowly disappear. Common for older engines. Very little else "cures itself". If it continues to be quiet, all is well.
