Help Testing FPR 200 1983

To start off, I have a 83 with a B23f with LH 2.0.

The car is running rich so I'm working through the systems to diagnose.

Right now I am trying to test the Fuel Pressure Regulator by using the technique in the FAQ here on brickboards.

Here is how I am testing:
Removing the fuel hose from the rear of the fuel rail by the firewall. I am assuming this is the return hose. I then connect a length of hose to the rear of the fuel rail and put it in a receptacle.

However, when I do this and try to start the car fuel comes out of the "return hose" and not the hose connected to the fuel rail. Of course it also doesnt start. Does this mean that the pressurized end of the fuel rail is the end by the firewall and not the one by the FPR?

Do I have things backwards? Your help is appreciated.
