'96 960 Shifter problem 900

I have a '96 960 and the shifter will not always release from park. The PNP switch has been replaced and the shifter microswitch was just changed for the second time. While replacing the microswitch again I noticed if I mess with the wire that goes down in the shifter (the spliced one) affects whether or not it works. Is there any way to get down ther to check the wire????
