front hood support - won't extend 1800

After selling my restored 122 wagon to a happy owner, I've been working on a 1970 P1800 that I picked up last winter. Although I learned a huge amount restoring the 122, I know I'll have a more than a few questions to ask re: the the P1800.

So here goes....I removed the front hood and the hood support arm. When I removed the support arm it was extended and locked into place. Later I pushed the extended part of the support back into the collapsed (or un-extended position). However, now I can't unlock the thing to extended the arm again. It seems locked forever in the collapsed state. I've tried poking things into the side slider rails in hopes of unlocking something so I can pull it to the extended position, but no luck.

Anyways, this seems like a dumb problem but there must be a solution.

Thanks all

Waggin
