Hot restart low idle 200 1991

If I shut the car off and restart it after just a few minutes (gas station, post office, etc.) it has been idling real low, at about 400-500 rpm and the check engine light stays on. I can give it some gas and it will rev right up and the light goes out but for 5-10 seconds it idles real low and sometimes dies, but if i keep it running for the 5-10 second period it fixes itself. Yesterday while picking my son up from school it did not want to restart at all, i let it sit for 5 minutes and it fired right up but with the low idle. There are no stored trouble codes and i don't want to get stranded, any ideas?
