I have a 90 740turbo.
Bad head gasket, possible cracked block (It was cracked and repaired 10 years ago). Car was overheated. Car has been driven 3000 miles since head gasket went bad, on the assumption that the engine would be replaced. I've changed the oil when it got milkshake-y. It's been sitting 3 months now, and the gasket went bad almost 12 months ago.
Here's my dilemma: I'm moving and now have 2 cars and a motorcycle. I found a used long-block with a 3-month warranty for $400.
I have a beater 244 to use in the mean time. It needs about the same price in parts before I would want to use it as a daily driver long term. The 740's in much better condition everywhere besides the engine.
I've disassembled, repaired, and reassembled a couple of small engines. I've never opened a multi-cylinder engine.
I know I have to pull off the head, which means pulling off the exhaust and intake manifolds. I know it means pulling the timing belt.
Do I have to remove the camshaft and distributor, or can I pull off the head in one piece? I have a feeling I can't.
I'd be willing to pull and replace the HG for the hell of it before I toss the engine, depending on the probability I'll damage something in the process.
Do I need special tools? Is there a shop manual somewhere?
I just want some more info before I try to go one way or another.
