Steerind wheel wood inlays cracking. S90-V90 1998

Lovely cherry wood inlaid steering wheel is developing cracks and a small piece of wood has fallen out and disappeared.

Perhaps the hot summer sun has weakened the cement holding the wood to the wheel, allowing the wood to become a bit loose so that a whack with a wide finger ring (wife's) will crack the wood.

Anyone here experienced anything similar? Any ideas on repairs?
