1990 780 6 cyl..air flow sensor issue (engine surge) 700 1990

I have a 1990 780 6 cyl. I bought the car with 89,000 miles and now has 160K.
I experience recurring intermittent problem with engine surge. I've been told that I have a problem with the air flow sensor. The tail pipe is black which I guess indicates that I'm getting too much gas. This problem was fixed once before in order for me to pass emission control inspection.

The other issue is that my high light switch goes flakely every year, it seems.
The dash light will go out, which means I have no tail lights. I can get it refunctioning by turning the switch on and off until it recatches.

I love this car but it drives me crazy and very few mechanics like working on it because the 780 can be a bear.

Is there anyone out there who knows the 780 car intimately? Also, who is the best source for engine and body parts. And, does anyone know a good Volvo mechanic in the Washington, DC/Maryland/Northern Virginia Area?

Thanks... Jim Preston, Washington, D.C.
