GPS Instead of Speedo ............ 700

1991 Volvo 740 sedan. Well my speedometer has gone haywire and it will costs nearly $150 and be about a two hour job to replace it with a new(used)one. So as I have been thinking of getting a GPS anyway and since GPS devices give speed/mph rather then replace my speedo instead I am thinking of getting a GPS. I am in NJ. Anyone know if that would be legal ? Also recomendations for best pick of GPS(brand/model). I would primarily be using it as a speedometer. Thanks.
