AMM issues re-phrased 200 1983

(posted earlier today, but I guess I was asking the wrong questions)

Put a rebuilt AMM on my '83 244, Friday. All weekend (though I didn't drive it much), it would die almost every time it went to idle speed. The first couple days, on acceleration, I heard some random electronic-sounding clicking and buzzing from somewhere under the middle of the dash (not from the ECU).

Today, I drove it a lot more, and lo and behold, it doesn't die at idle anymore. Still idling quite roughly, but it does still have sooty spark plugs. Also, I checked the gas mileage, and it almost doubled with this rebuilt AMM. At least I know what was making it run so rich.

So did these electronic things just have to talk to each other for awhile? That old AMM had been on there making it run rich for several years.
