speedo motor repair? 200 1992

Over time, my odometer gears fail. I always replace with gears gleaned from PNPs until the last in my inventory failed. I replaced this with one ordered on-line. To my great surprise, the odometer wouldn't turn. I found that gear in pristine condition, so something else must be out of order. I have a spare gauge cluster and went through a planned method of replacing circuit board, speedo, and even examining my method of replacement. Seems that the speedo itself might of suddenly failed simultaneously with the last gear failure. The replacement speedo has 40k miles less on its clock, but would rather have an odometer that more accurately registers mileage accrued.

So, can the speedo motor be bench tested and how? Can the motor be replaced? Looks like I would have to start by removing the gauge face. Not sure how the small two wires from the motor are attached to the the speedo. The larger brown wires are soldered at both ends. Am I wasting my time?
