1983 volvo 240 cruise surges and guages cut out 200

OK all, here's a duesy...

1983 volvo 240GL, 450k miles. I'm driving my usual 66 mph with cruise on. all of a sudden i feel it surge, and at the same rate of surge the lights on the radio flash, and the guages on the dash start to drop.

Seems like a battery, alternator/regulator, belt problem, right?

BUT, when i pull off the highway and come to a stop, the lights come back up, guages are fine, and I get back on the road for 20 minutes or so without a problem.

I replaced the regulator on the back of the alternator a couple years ago, so the brushes should be ok right?

For the last 2 days since it started I have just made my drives a lot more serene - as soon as it happens i just ease off into the slow lane for awhile or off the road completely.

I never have to shut off the car and it never dies. starts right up the next morning too no problem.

show the old gal some love and point me in the right direction - i can only assume it will get worse over time.

mike
