Mechanical noise in engine 900

Yesterday while driving the 92 945T I suddenly began to hear what sounded like pinging under acceleration. Over the course of a 10-mile out and back errand this increased to a definate mechanical metal on metal impact sound. No CEL, no increase in temperature, no oil light but towards the end was running on 3 of 4 cylinders. Noise was worse at high manifold pressure and low RPM. I fear the worst, if this is valves or bearings I'm probably not up to the repair job. The car did have an overheating incident about 18 months ago ending up with a new radiator. I haven't had a chance to even look under the hood yet but thought I would ask the Brickboard for most likely causes.
