If your wheel bearings have any play, then they have worn. The greater the wear in a bearing, the greater the degree of energy transformed into heat. There is a point at which the amount of heat generated causes the bearing to wear. At this point, the bearing has entered a thermal runaway condition and could fail catastrophically.
