AW-71L Transmission Noisy in 1st Gear? 900 1993

I have a 1993 940 Wagon with 221K miles I bought this Spring at an auction. After considerable work, it really runs nice. The only thing that bothers me is the noisy 1st gear. I have done a complete transmission oil change and cleaned the pan, among other things. The transmission shifts with tight transitions but that 1st gear really whines. Could this be the rubber balls that are worn down in the transmission and mentioned in the FAQS? I tightened the shiftdown cable to the transmission and it made it a little quieter but it is still noisy and the shift point is a bit high in the upper gears and O.D. now in my opinion.
