1993 940 Transmission problems 900

My 93 940 wagon went through a series of symptoms on a 20-mile trip today. First indication was on the freeway, where it wanted to shift down to 3rd more readily that normal on slight inclines. Normal has always been a bit sooner than in my old 1990 740 wagon, though. Symptom got worse and worse, until over a short period on the freeway 2-3 miles it quit shifting into 4th at all, leading to working in 2nd only, then 1st only. This lead me quickly to give up and call AAA. So, it drives forward in 1st just fine and in reserve as normal. Just won't shift up to 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. Car has 248K on it and PO had serviced the tranmission regularly. As have I. One problem occurred a year ago when the radiator failed and managed to mix coolant with transmission fluid. This resulted in 'frothy' looking transmission fluid. I caught this immediately and use the pump out and fill method to cycle in 14 quarts of new stuff. I belief it is an AW71. I had a previous 740 with an AW70 that experienced no problems through the day I sold it at 305K.
