Dashpot sticks in carb 120-130

I can manage a few repairs on my Amazon but I have always been afraid of doing too much on the SU carbs. The car has been running rough so I thought maybe the air filters (foam elements from the late Dave Gard / Old Kombi) were dirty/clogged. I cleaned them and was replacing when I realized that one of the dashpots had not traveled all the way back down to resting position. I think that must have been the major trouble, especially with my idle. I gently pushed it down and the car ran much better.

What causes the dashpot to stick on its way back down? Should I be doing some preventative maintenance there?

Also, the car really vibrates when the car is in gear and I take my foot off the gas. It shakes as it travels through the lowest RPM range just before it balances to a smooth idle. Could that be related?
