Manual Overdrive has to heat up before engaging 200 1984

So I have never been on a forum before and am a bit perplexed as what to do. I can imagine this thread could be out there but I could not find it. If this question is redundant, I appoligize.

I have a manual 84’ 240 with OD that will only shift into od when the engine is warmed up. Fortunately, I live in the desert. I have never serviced the overdrive. ….and I have had the car for 11 years. (I know… bad me) My guess is that would be the place to start. I have the Bently book, and I can rebuild an engine, but transmissions make me nervous. It is so easy to make a mistake and destroy things with a transmission. So 2 questions: Any tips on how not to destroy my OD when it hasn’t been disrupted for 150k. And do you think doing this service will fix the problem.
