Volt Gauge & Wire to engine compartment location 200 1989

Hi All again.

I was getting some odd readings on the new voltgauge I installed - Mainly it stayed in the orange area, so I borrowed a multi-meter and did some testing.

To review: I checked the voltage at the battery, at the fuse strip I pulled power from and at the connections to the volt meter - 12.5v at all places with the engine at idle/slight revs. So I checked the voltmeter on a known voltage source. Up to 12.5v the meter hovered in the orange. At 13v the needle jumped up to about 1/3 of the way in the black. At 14v a little over 2/3 in the black. 14.7 started into the orange zone on the overcharge side. So my conclusion is the voltmeter does not give a consistent "sweep" in relation to voltage. Its almost as if it "steps" up as voltage increases.

My question becomes: Do all Volvo voltmeters function like this or is my gauge just defective? Have I missed some obvious electrical connection of some kind causing the gauge to malfunction? (Its wired key-on fuse strip tab to + terminal on gauge, - terminal to ground).

Second question: I need to run a wire into the engine compartment and all the pass throughs are well sealed with boots and things. I'd prefer not to tear all the boots apart to find a likely pass through. I'm sure many of you have ran wires into the engine compartment, so where would be the first place to look? There appears to be a likely one on the firewall of the passenger side. Again booted and sealed..

Next task.. suspension/handling..

Thanks all!!
