Failed transfer pump - symptoms? 200

Hi all,

Still in the process of rehabilitating a 1985 240DL which has been sitting for 18 months or so. Please excuse the long post!

It was sitting idling in my drive for a couple of minutes, so I could test my new water pump. It coughed to a stop, and wouldn't start again. The plugs were dry, no gas smell, so I suspected the filter was blocked with all the gunk from the 18 month old gas. I got the filter off, and it was blocked. I can just about blow through it if I really force it.

I decided to drain the tank by shorting out the fuel relay, but I soon noticed the fuel flow out of the main pump was intermittent, and spluttering, rather than flowing at a constant rate.

The main pump sounds like it's whirring along quite happily, so I'm guessing this is a transfer pump problem. Does this sound plausibe?

Many thanks,
Tim
