Click............Then Crank....Intermittent problem. 700 1991

Hi all,

My '91 740 GL Wagon has had a strange problem for a couple of months. Here's a description:

1. Sometimes it starts right up, no problems at all.
2. Sometimes I turn the key and get a "click" and anywhere from 1 to 20 seconds later, the starter cranks the engine and she starts up. (This holding the key in the "Start" position the entire time)

Here's my troubleshooting so far:

1. Dissassembled and cleaned all battery components. All wire brushed until shiny. Tested battery and charging. All check good.

2. Removed all wiring from the starter and cleaned all contacts. The nuts seemed a little loose when I first took them off, so I thought I had the problem solved, but it returned after a day or so.

3. Cleaned the negative battery terminal chassis ground points. All are in good shape and tight.

4. Cleaned the ground point on the engine block just above the starter.

I've clened the battery and starter contacts a few times and this always seems to resolve the problem, but it always returns within a day or so.

Are there any grounds I'm missing?

If it's the starter I think I'm going to have to take it in, because I understand the top bolt isn't something to attempt in your driveway.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Scott T.
