pre pump pain in the rear 700

SO I have a couple posts going regarding my bosch fuel issue.

I had to bite the bullet and remove prepump again. I thought that I had it set right because it was marked. Then I was having trouble with my fuel gauge and it was running rough on low fuel.

These were new symptoms after my original work (replaced filter, pre and main pumps, and relay.

Today I took the assembly out and the pump was practically torn off the flimsy little bracket. What a pain. So, i guess i found the problem. Prepump needs to be set up right this time with pump connected to assembly.

Here is my question, I know that I need to use the sting trick but do I need to leave the sender expanded and then compress as I rotate or can I lock it in position with the string and then maneuver assembly into place?
