1981 242 DL Voltage Regulator Questions 200

I am a total newbie to DIY car maintenance, so I apologize for what may seem to be a stupid question.

My car is a 1981 242 DL with the B21F MPG engine. My dash lights have been rhythmically pulsating and it was suggested to me that this could be an issue with the voltage regulator. Rather than looking at what was actually screwed into the back of the alternator, I just went right out and bought the part on the left.

Unfortunately, my existing regulator seems to be connected by a wire to an external device.

Can the part I purchased be installed safely? If not, is anyone familiar with the part on the right? I can't seem to find anything similar on the FCP Groton web site.

Thanks!
