Heat Blowing From Vents 900 1992

Hello Volvo community,

I recently purchased a 1992 Volvo 940 non turbo for a cheap price and I'm still learning the ins and outs of these cars since I'm coming from the Lincoln community. One question I have is when my car is at operating temperature (gauge is at the middle) there is heat blowing from the vents. The A/C isn't on and I made sure outside air isn't flowing in..also it's cold over in the area anyway. What kind of problem do you guys think this could be?

Another small question is that I noticed that when it's dark outside I cannot see the shift indicator because it doesn't light up to say whether it's in Park or reverse ect..is this the norm for these cars or is the light out?
