1989 16 Valve - loud valves when cold? 700 1989

Hi guys,

Our family has had an 8V (B230) for 12 years, but we recently got a 16V 1989 740GLE and it's a new learning experience. One thing that I can't figure out is this: the valves are really loud when the car is cold, clickety clacking, but get quieter when the car warms up. Is this normal? What's causing it?
