AW transmission- shifts fine cold; no movement(forward or reverse) at operating temperature 700 1992

1992 745 185K

Previous owner was only able to tell me the transmission was "broken". Made a "clunk" and then wouldn't move.

After I got it started (sitting 3 years) there was a distinct whirring sound from the transmission area (selector in PARK)- similiar to a playing card in bicycle spokes sound, but more metallic and not as loud. When selecting gears the car would move forward and reverse.

The transmission was 1 1/2 quarts overfilled. Drained to the correct level the whirring sound was reduced but not eliminated.

At initial startup the car will move forward and reverse with no problem. On the road the shifts are smooth and at the correct point. Overdrive engages like it should. Overdrive switch works properly.

Once the car warms up (temperature gauge centered) there is no engagement of the tramsmission. No forward or reverse movement.

Your thoughts, please?

Randy
