motor swap out on a 1987 245 compatibility 200 1987

So I bought a 87 245 in L.A. and it has had a bad head gasket for awhile. Funny how volvos do not show it they just keep on going, until idle and compression go too low. Problem is, even after you do a valve job and change out the head gasket, good chance coolant has gotten down below and before long crank section will be clicking and tapping etc.

So I would like to just put in a tested (compression) motor and save the heartache. Given that there are changes in ignition computers and distributors in later years, can anyone tell me which years would be a smooth swap out for this car? Another way of putting it would be what year does the 2.2 system end? Thanks.
