1995 940 non-turbo timing belt cover destroyed- ever had this happen? 900

Hi Guys,
I had a timing belt failure on a standard B230 yesterday. However, this time, it destroyed both the upper and lower timing belt plastic covers. The belt basically busted through both covers. Is this normal? I have had timing belts fail, but not damage/destroy the covers.
Any comments?
