Soft brake pedal after pad change!!!??? - ughh 200 1990

I set about to simply mount my snow tires this afternoon. Upon removing the tires, I noticed the front pads were getting down there. I'd been planning on replacing them when a convenient time came around, so why not now. The plan was also to replace the rotors. I had everyhting "in stock".


I used a C-clamp to push back the pistons.
My one possible slip up may have been my attempt to wedge a shim between the pad and piston after the whole works was assembled. I fear I may have compromised (sliced) the rubber boot of the piston while performing this bone-head maneuver.

Anyway, put everything back together, started her up, and now have a low, soft pedal compared to before.

My questions:

1.) If I over compressed the pistions with teh C-Clamp, could I have gotten some air in there??

2.) When the piston is compressed, there is lots of rubber boot visible and not much piston visible. WHile trying to jam the shim against this boot could I have gotten air in the system?? I dont notice any leaks.


It was starting to get dark and I'm really kicking myself for rushing through this job. Any thoughts?? I have a power bleeder, so I think I'll attempt a bleed, if that doesnt work I may replace the calipers, which are quite old... rust everywhere.
