Yikes! My long reply! To a Radiator question 200 1989

I have heard the Nissen metal brands were good and picked up an extra one at a PNP. It is a back up even though I have gotten rid of the plastic radiators. Like oil and other things, I stock up.

I have use Zerex G05 for years. I think they were the first to come out with the five-year coolant. The term G05 stuck!

The competitors have tried the OAT technology but they had their own problems. Valvoline snuff them, until their patents ran out. IMO
It was not in that gold package back then either. Valvoline has a thing about SALES packaging that has developed. I think, for the most part, it is not a good thing. When it is redone, it is a signal, that the price or product is doing something or about too. It is just my experience talking here!

I do not know what the competitors are using to get that five-year high water mark today. I know I have not had to change any heater cores over all these years with GO5.

“Dexcool” red or orange I do not know, but it has had a many reformulations besides the colors. Same with the “Dexron” brand, transmission fluid. I think they started numbering them at #3 and are up to #5 or #6 by now.

Prestone is as the name implies. It puts white powdered rocks in the radiator. They used to use a silicate (to me, meant sand) in it. My Dad used it, so I did.
I know better today, because I always used distilled water in my mix and got that stuff as a heavy deposit impinging the ends of the tubes.

“Shell” use to advertise it was the purist of the fluids, in the old days. That had me thinking for sometime about what they were trying to put out there.

Then Prestone screwed me out of a rebate back some years ago because I refused to send them the foil film under the cap because there is a reason for it to be on there. It is for storage and bottle leakage protection. Have a crack show up in the bottom. You will find out that it air bounds and stops.

A receipt and bar codes were not good enough for them.
I buy out ahead of my using it. That is what advertised sales are for, in my book!

Now I pay them back by always buying any other “named” product. Turns out, I have found better products for my effort. Prestone just re-cans with their label on most things IMHO.

Heck, Ashland Inc. may make stuff for them. Mergers have run rampant in years past and present. Wal-Mart and Quaker State are friends too. I have used Quaker in the way back past too. I decided that if I poured it in at the tail pipe, it would get there quicker. I had heard murmurs, that their oil had problems in fleet usage back then. Their name has suffered for it.

I use Valvoline Synthetic Dot 3&4 brake fluid. They were possibly first again on this a synthetic product too! It has a little bit higher boiling points with out as much a moisture problem as the others. I do not race but if it works for them and comes WITHOUT the NASCAR commission driven label on it, I am more obliged to try it.

Valvoline products are not in every place I shop. I have to hunt them down. It is like the old days, when you had to ask a drug store pharmacist for those special things, behind the counter. Now they are at the check out!

One place I found ordered the Go5 by the case, for a commercial fleet customer. I have spotted it there now, on its own special shelf. It is a small distance away from the big display of antifreeze. I figured that it appears too expensive when compared to the off brands and those that have been premixed with, who know what is in it, water.
In addition, the profit margin between products comes into play!

When you divide the years into the Go5 over all the others, there is only this one to buy.

Today, it is buyer be trained and not to be a fresh young sparring partner against the marketers!

Do I like Zerex GO5 and Valvoline products, or what?
The spelling of Volvo line is close!
