I carry liability (a huge amount) w/ occupant injury protection etc. And comprehensive for protection against loss by theft, fire, .... and some oddball things eg. if I hit a deer I'm covered because the deer is moving.
No collision. Net, if I screw up I fix/ cannibalize the car myself. Otherwise I'm covered.
My insurance co warns me every year that my only protection on the car if someone hits me is to go after the other insurance company - If I had collision my ins co would fight with the other company I guess. That's never happened so I don't know how it will work in practical terms.
I also pay (OH law I think) for "uninsured motorist's coverage" to cover me if the other person is uninsured. (This after the insurance companies rammed "no-fault" and mandatory coverage down our throats 25+ years ago. He said cynically.)
Sidebar: Usually my 240s are rough so paying for collision would be a bad investment for me. But I have a nice one right now and might put collision on it through the winter; and I might sell it so I can go back to driving my old 245 work car.
