M47 Shifter Help! And quick, please! 200 1990

HeeeelllllP!!!

I'm about 70 miles from home, and the shift lever in my 5-speed 240 has cut loose. I can see that it has dropped down out of the ball-and-socket joint that holds it together. The linkage is still solidly attached both to the shift lever and the selector shaft on the gearbox, and with difficulty I can still shift gears if I pull up on the lever. But I can't figure out what is (or was) supposed to hold the ball of the lever up into its socket. Bentley seems to provide no help, and I haven't found any good pics online that might shed some light on the issue.

If anyone could suggest anything I might want to check, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanx!
