1800ES M410 gearshift loosens? 1800 1973

This is an odd one. The gearshift knob/lever in my 73 ES loosens itself all the time. Twist the shaft and it tightens, but only for a little bit. Hense my shift pattern on the knob is NEVER pointed the right way, and it torments my OCD to no end. What's going on with the gearshift lever? Is there a simple way to keep it from spinning round and round?
