No Start 200

The backup lights were not coming on my 1991 240 so I removed the cover on the backup switch and cleaned the electrical contacts, applied di-electric grease and replaced the cover. Now I have the backup lights working again, but my car will not start, fuel pump kicks in, radio, blower and all the other electrical components seem to work. Right after the repair when I tried to start it up, it was like the battery was dying and barely made a weak turnover. I tried boosting it to see if that would make it start, nothing still. I used steel wool to clean the contacts on the backup switch. Could that have created an electical problem from the little fine fibers in the steel wool? I am lost. Thanks.
