Which year AW71 and AW71L are compatible with a 1990 turbo wagon? 700

From the FAQ:

740 85-90 4 SPEED RWD L4 2.3L TURBO AW 71 03-71
740 90-92 4 SPEED RWD L4 2.3L TURBO AW 71L 03-71L

Just my luck, I have a 1990 turbo which apparently could have one of two transmissions. How do I know if my 1990 has a 03-71 or 03-71L? Are they compatible, because I have read that there was some kind of change in the 1990 year, hall effect sensors and bellhousing different? Maybe not compatible with each other?

If I pull a transmission from e.g. a 1994 940 turbo, will that fit? When it was working, the transmission didn't lock up on the highway, but I bought the car used from a family member this year and even if it did have lockup when new, it may have been broken.
