1987 240dl heater woes 200

My grandson's volvo heater has gone bad, not good in 28 degree weather. We believe it's the blower motor that has failed as it doesn't make the horrible noises that it used to when it was running, because it doesn't run at all now. We have secured a Chilton's covering the years 1990-98. Is there a significant diference in the heaters from these years and earlier ones? IOW can we use this later Chilton's to proceed on the repair.? Also any hints on removal replacement? Is there any chance to repair the existing, say just a clean up and lube or bearing replacement?
