I replaced the bulbs in my environmental unit over the summer. It is a bit of dismantling to get the unit out, and while you do, you may wish to replace every bulb to save the inconvenience of doing it twice.
First, take out the radio. You may have to turn the ignition on the move the gear shifter out of the way to get the radio out. Just slide the radio out but do not unplug any connectors on the rear until you have disonnnected the negative battery terminal in a few steps. Be sure you have the radio code to get it going again.
Take out the ashtray. It has a spring under the lip.
Second, disconnect the negative battery terminal. Now you can disconnect the radio plugs and set it aside.
Third, remove the air vent grates. To do this pull straight out. Sometimes it helps to tilt them to get a grip. Remove the screws under the top of the vents.
Fourth, There are two torx screws by the ashtray that hold the large wood grain trim piece in. Undo these. To remove the large piece, use a screw driver to pry the two clips inward. There is one on each side of the cavity where the radio goes about half way up.You will have to unplug a few wires as you go such ashtray lights etc. Make note of where the light plugs go.
Fifth, the temperature unit is held in with torx 25 screws on wither side. I believe there are four in total. Remove these, and the unit slides out. Undo the electronic clips that plus it into the car.
Once the unit is out, there are small screws that hold on an aluminum cover on I believe top of the unit. Undo these.
Once the unit is open, you will see two or two or three black fittings with wires. These hold the bulbs. Turn them 1/4 turn, and they will pop off.
Volvo tells us that the entire wiring harness has to be replaced. This is not true. Rather, the bulbs are single rice bulbs for $1.85 each. I bought mine at the stealership.
There may also be other bulbs that light the individual buttons. If so, these will have a white round base. These can be removed by using s slotted screwdriver and turning 1/4 turn.
The best way to replace these is to go to the Honda dealership. These same bulbs were in the 98-2002 Accord, and will cost 2/3 less than Volvo charges.
Sorry if this is not the best description, but it should help get you started.
