I don't think that I have ever had a light switch go bad...

Have you owned any pre-86 240's in the past 10 years? Those passed all the lighting current through the dashboard switch. In 86, the heavy lifting got moved to a relay, and the dashboard switch is just a light-duty relay picker.

Charred switches were common then.
