After buying our 1997 960 Wagon last month I noticed the fog lights didn't work. When replacement bulbs didn't help either I pulled the lights out of the car to see what was going on. It turns out they not only had an accumulation of dirt and rust on the inside of the lenses the bulb seat was heavily rusted.
Apparently the light bulbs weren't working because of a loss of continuity from corrosion at the cable contact points. Trying to clean these things up has been quite a chore. They don't come apart and there isn't much room to get any kind of tool into the light housing itself.
By hook and crook I managed to get most of the rust and all the dirt, sand etc. out of the housing and using CLR I soaked the rusted steel bulb mount with cotton and got most of the rust out of there. After installing the new bulbs I used a lubricant intended for rubber gaskets in pool equipment on the O ring seal around the cap that covers the access to the bulb. The lights are again working.
Yea, there's a question in here. Has anyone come up with a practical way to clean these lights up, in particular the inside of the glass lens, or is locating a new pair the only practical solution?
