Odometer repair update 200

I posted last week about changing the odometer gear in my '87; someone had replaced the speedo with one from a newer model because there was an engine service reset assembly in place on this one, and I don't think that was a part of the original speedometer. The spring that holds the wheel in place fell out when I pulled the speedo, and the clear plastic pin that held it in place was broken. When I opened up the odometer as per the instructions, I found the little gear missing one tooth, so I replaced it with the new one, put everything back together again (without the spring for the engine service gear) and still have no odometer movement. Two questions: does the engine service reset assembly have to be working for the odometer to work, and if it doesn't, what else could be wrong? I'm hoping I don't have to spring for an odometer motor.
