trashed engine? - advice please 900

Thanks for your posts. Ironically, my mechanic too thought it sounded more like the coil (which was cracked by the way). So... he replaced the coil, installed new spark plugs, changed the oil, did a complete brake service, and - when the car ran no better than before - he checked the compression (!!!). I'm bummed. The compression reading in #1 was ~30 lbs/in2.

I've since spoken with my mechanic of choice (not the one referenced above) and I will likely go for pulling the head. If it's a burnt valve I'll probably go for the repair (ouch!). If it's the bottom end, well, I'll probably look for another car (double ouch!!).
