new cam seal blown, lubed cam shaft too much when install? 200 1986

happy new year,

i installed a new volvo brand cam oil seal yesterday, and i used the special tool to install it. i followed instructions from faq and this well known website.

http://www.volvoadventures.com/howtodocambelt.html

i did not scratch the cam shaft when i pulled the original seal out.

when i installed the new seal, i lubed the the inner and outer part of where the seal seats.

i installed the new seal about 2mm from edge and made sure the outer part where the seal sits was wiped clean.

my flame trap plumbing is clear.

but today, the new seal is leaking a lot.

Question:
did i incorrectly lube the wrong part of where the seal goes or too much oil?
can one lubricate too much the area where the seal goes?
should i lube the metal parts at all?
did i seat the seal too far from the edge?

thanks again,
byron golden
