960 EVAP valve troubleshooting S90-V90

I'm receiving a P0440 code on my 97 960 -- which means "Evap Valve Leaking" and a Check Engine light. I'm trying to diagnose this valve (it's mounted on the fusebox in the engine compartment).

Does anybody know if the valve is open or closed when disconnected from the wiring harness? The valve has two nipples on it, I'm thinking I should be able to disconnect the hose between the valve and the charcoal can and observe some measurable changes in vacuum... does anybody know what I should see and when?

Thanks in advance,

ed
