Trying to replace the ignition coil on a '66 122 120-130

Hello,

For a very clean installation when you have to replace the coil with an aftermarket unit, you can reuse the original ignition switch and the original coil assembly metal can with mounting flange.

With the old coil assembly removed, twist the armored cable close to the bottom of the coil in the correct direction while pulling and the armored cable will slide out of the bottom of the coil.

You can then cut the wire that goes to the bottom of the coil.

Use the same twisting technique to remove the entire armored cable from the back of the ignition switch.

Next, you have to cut the top and the bottom off the coil and then gut the coil so you can reuse the original metal can with mounting flange.

You then have to glue at least 2 strips of rubber 1 near the top and 1 near the bottom of the replacement coil so that it fits tightly into the old coil can.

Some coils are larger in diameter than others so you have to find the correct thickness rubber.

I found that some window shops have rubber strips for installing the brackets on the bottom of car/truck roll up windows.

The window bracket rubber comes in different thickness' so you have to find which one works best.

If you wrap the coil with the retaining rubber, leave staggered gaps to allow air flow.

While writing this response, I thought about using vertical strips of rubber instead of wrapping the coil for better air flow and I will try that technique the next time I do this modification.
