How many ways to screw up timing belt?? 700 1992

Well, the head is installed along with a new Water pump, gasket set and set of drive belts, including a new timing belt and roller. She will not start upon cranking. It seems to backfire or just cough a couple of times at first ,but then nothing except cranking.
I've re-checked the timing and when the mark on the crankshaft is on the O (TDC) timing mark, the mark on the camshaft pulley is on the mark behind it on the rear plastic cover.I know the idler pulley is moot (except on a 240). I've even removed the #1 spark plug and felt with a Phillips screwdriver that the #1 piston is up on the cylinder (could be on the exhaust instead of compression????). I can see the top of the piston through the spark plug hole.
I have a spark tester that connects to the spark plug wire and upon cranking it revealed that there IS spark being delivered to the plugs.

Tomorrow I will remove the old cap and rotor and replace it with a new set in hopes that I have installed the rotor 90 degrees off.

OK, how many ways can the distributor be installed on the back of the head? I thought only one way.
How many ways can the camshaft gear be installed on the camshaft? I thought only one way since it has a drive key.
How many ways can the crankshaft drive gear be installed on the crankshaft?
I thought only one way since the drive knob has to engage the rear of the harmonic balancer.

Any help will be appreciated by a frustrated Volvo lover.

thanks,
el raidman
