I just purchased a 1984 Volvo 240 DL Wagon (Automatic). It is tan, with dark brown interior, and I love this car. I think it has a timeless, confident style and is so versatile. The relatively low mileage (130k) and cosmetic condition of the car really sold me. As well as the price.
HOWEVER...
Since purchasing the car a few weeks ago, I have replaced the battery, and had a new alternator installed. This was all due to the car refusing to start one very cold morning last week. Much to my disappointment, and after the repair, the car again refused to start the subsequent day. I was out in Brooklyn with some friends, and one said, "Hey - put it in drive, and then put it in park again - then see if it starts!"
It did indeed start! Ever since, if I go more than a few hours without driving the car, I need to 'rattle' the gear shift back and forth. Sometimes it takes a little while. Enough time to leave me thinking in my head, "what if it doesn't start...what if I'm late...what if I'm stranded..."
My question is : what would lead to this strange problem? I have read a bit on the board about something call a shift microswitch, but in relationship to another model and year. On a car of this vintage, is it an electrical issue, is it mechanical, or does it have anything to do with the cold?
