It would have taken just a matter of minutes, but of course, compressing the tensioner spring was a problem. Running a small screwdriver through the dole pin didn't produce enough room to squeeze the adjuster into place. I ended up hammering an open end wrench around the spring and compressing it on the pin with large lock jaw pliers. Wonders upon wonders, the wench didn't slip off the spring during the installation.
Of course all this was for naught. The bearing-like noise that I thought was coming from the tensioner ended up being caused by the Volvo OEM belt going from the balancer to the AC compressor. It seemed to be properly adjusted and aligned correctly. I used a little hand soap to quiet it.
When I aligned the cam gear to the notch on the back cover before removing the tensioner, I also noticed that the harmonic balancer mark had moved counterclockwise about an inch past TDC. Without the lower cover and balancer removed, I wasn't sure how to check if the alignment was really off or perhaps caused by the balancer slipping. As mentioned in my previous post, the balancer could be the source of the squeal during cold morning start ups. Although the rubber inside the balancer looked almost like new.
I guess I'm going to have to wait for the next cold morning to find out.
