front suspension, springs 900

I'm finally getting around to replacing a bunch of worn front suspension parts. Putting new ball joints on sure made a difference. Next it is tie rods and struts/shocks. How do I know if the springs need to be replaced, and is this a common thing to do when one replaces struts at 150k miles?

Also, if I were to put in new springs, does anybody have experience with the "sports" type that are available from IPD and some other outfits--they seem to lower the car a little. If cost is roughly the same, are there pro/cons to using these springs?

thanks!
