I used the the LH 2.0 from the '83 engine. This meant tearing the B230F down to a "naked engine" and bolting up everything - including the distributor - from the B23F. I threw in a "new" Dave Barton wiring harness while I was at it. I also took apart the front end of the B230F and replaced the water pump, timing belt, tensioner, and cam seals with OEM parts. Replaced the rear main seal, had the flywheel turned, and installed a new clutch kit from IPD as well. Of course I also did all of the hoses and belts, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap and rotor, air filter, etc. Also cleaned out the throttle body (NASTY!) and flame trap plumbing. Reused the old B23 injectors.
Finally, I threw a rebuilt Bosch starter on to the B230F and had the alternator rebuilt by a local shop, figured why not.
Total cost was about $1,500.00, and three weeks (on and off) of my time. That was five years and 80,000 miles ago, and I haven't had a problem with the installation. It passes smog by a very wide margin (almost undetectable emissions), and I find that the B230F has more power AND gets better milage than the B23F.
